William Wood was an American United States Army officer. William Wood was commissioned as an Infantry Second Lieutenant after graduating from Florida State University in 1984. William Wood was then selected to serve as the deputy division operations officer for the 1st Infantry Division which deployed to Kosovo. He served as the commanding officer of the 184th Infantry Regiment in Iraq, and (as of November 2005) was the highest ranking United States military casualty in the Iraq War. He wore the rank of lieutenant colonel, because he had not been informed that he had been approved for promotion to colonel.
Wood was killed while directing his soldiers in response to the explosion of an improvised explosive device when a second device was detonated.[1]
He was based in Fort Stewart, Georgia.
